An archival, soft, white wove paper, moderately sized. This paper gains strength during the toning process which should follow traditional practice.
First coat the paper with a thin starch solution & leave to dry slowly to avoid undue cockling.
When dry apply dye with a sponge or soft large brush. A dilute solution of raw umber gives a characteristic warm brown tone. Leave to dry slowly.
Burnish on both sides when dry. The more you burnish the more the surface becomes closed & the drape & thinness increases.
Traditionally for higher quality work another coating or two was applied - this time of glair which was hardened.
